Google Unifies Android, Chrome, and Hardware Divisions to Drive Innovation

Google has announced a significant reorganization that involves merging its Android, Chrome, and hardware divisions into a single entity named the "Platforms and Devices" team. This move aims to streamline operations and accelerate innovation across Google's product ecosystem.

The Change

Leading the newly formed division is Rick Osterloh, who previously served as the Senior Vice President of Google Hardware. Hiroshi Lockheimer, the former head of software platforms such as Android and ChromeOS, will transition to new projects within Google.

According to Google CEO Sundar Pichai, the consolidation of these divisions will enhance product quality and expedite decision-making processes. Pichai emphasizes the importance of leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to drive innovation, with the new division focusing on the intersection of hardware, software, and AI technologies.

Osterloh expressed his enthusiasm for the reorganization, highlighting the opportunity to accelerate AI innovation across the Android ecosystem. He also emphasized the strategic collaboration with Qualcomm, Google's partner in developing Android devices.

However, the announcement raises questions about Google's relationship with Qualcomm, particularly concerning the development of in-house chips for Pixel devices. Osterloh's comments about Google's previous limitations in AI, attributed to Qualcomm chips, hint at potential tensions between the two companies.

The reorganization also prompts speculation about how the Android ecosystem will respond to the consolidation. Google's assurance of maintaining a "firewall" between the Android and hardware teams aims to address concerns about favoritism towards in-house hardware products. Sameer Samat, a longtime Googler, will oversee the Android Ecosystem, building on his existing relationships within the ecosystem.
