Chinese electric vehicle startup, Xpeng Motors, has unveiled plans to expand its Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) across mainland China.

At the company's annual Tech Day event, CEO He Xiaopeng announced that Xpeng's X NGP (Navigation Guided Pilot) software would roll out in an additional 20 cities next month and an additional 25 cities by December. This expansion will enable certain Xpeng models to navigate autonomously following a software update.

Xpeng is confident in its autonomous driving technology and aims to make semi-autonomous vehicles available in urban areas. By December, the company plans to have its ADAS available in 50 cities, with a nationwide release in China and Europe scheduled for 2024.

The Tech Day event also showcased Xpeng's latest innovation, the X9. This multipurpose vehicle model comes equipped with rear-wheel steering as a standard feature, providing improved maneuverability similar to a regular-sized sports utility vehicle. The X9 will officially debut at the Guangzhou Auto Show in November.

Xpeng is adopting a cost-effective approach to autonomous driving technology by heavily relying on cameras and artificial intelligence. This strategy is reminiscent of Tesla's, as Xpeng seeks to offer a more affordable hardware suite. The incorporation of advanced occupancy networks, including deep neural networks predicting occupancy in three-dimensional space, enables collision avoidance without the need for certain sensors.

The X9 also features Xpeng's advanced XOS cabin intelligent system, powered by Qualcomm's 8295 processor. This system allows drivers and passengers to run different applications simultaneously with its split-screen mode, enhancing multitasking efficiency.

In addition, Xpeng unveiled its future plans to diversify its product lineup. The company revealed its first multipurpose vehicle model and presented two prototypes of electric vertical take-off and landing vehicles (eVTOLs). Xpeng's eVTOLs feature foldable designs and modular systems, allowing the separation of flight and automobile components. The company also introduced its humanoid robot prototype, the PX5, demonstrating impressive navigation and object interaction capabilities.
